WHAT IS POST-TENSIONING?
Post tensioning is a method of reinforcing concrete structures with high-strength steel tendons, which are tensioned after concrete has been poured. It is commonly used in commercial buildings for longer spans and thinner slabs. This method increases structural integrity, reduces the risk of cracking, and improves the overall lifespan and performance of the structure.
COMPONENTS
A post tensioning system employing strands is usually composed of:
Seven wire steel strand:
- Main tensile element transmitting the load through the entire tendon.
Anchor plate:
- Steel disk hosting strands and wedges, resting over the cast-iron block embedded into the concrete.
Anchor head:
- Piece designed to transfer the load to the surrounding concrete. In some systems it can also be designed to directly accommodate holes for wedges that grip the strand.
Live Wedge:
- Devices Capable of Gripping Single Strands and Efficiently Transferring Loads to Anchor Plates Through Conical Holes
Ducts:
- They create void conduits where the bundle of strands is threaded.
Grout:
- A mix of water & cement-like materials required to fill the voids within the duct, providing protection, full bonding.
